Reaching an agreement with the Crockett Foundation, the NWA reintroduced the Crockett Cup Tag Team Tournament in 2019. The tag team tournament was a springtime event for Jim Crockett Promotions in the mid-80s. The tournament lasted from 1986 to 1988. It’s 2019 the tournament made its return and crowned the new World Tag Team Championships. It should be noted that the latter two tournaments were two-night events. We learned on last week’s episode of NWA POWERRR, that the Crockett Cup was coming to Nashville, Tennessee. March 19th and March 20th will be the two nights, similar to the form of the 87 and 88 tournaments. Tournaments.
Jim Crockett Sr. Memorial Cup Tag Team Tournament
The Crockett Cup was the nickname given to the Jim Crockett Sr. Memorial Cup Tag Team Tournament. Hawk and Animal (the Road Warriors) became the first tournament champions. They defeated Bobby Eaton and Stan Lane in the 1986 Finals. The following year Nikita Koloff and Dusty Rhodes (the Super Powers) won the tournament. They defeated Horsemen members, Lex Luger and Tully Blanchard. In 1988, Blanchard and Luger would return to the finals, but on opposite sides of the ring. The Horsemen added Arn Anderson and Luger would team with Sting. Sting and Luger would become the 88 Tournament Champions.
2019 Crockett Cup Tag Team Tournament
Ring of Honor, CMLL, and New Japan Pro Wrestling would all send participants to the 2019 Crockett Cup. The NWA also introduced a “Wild Card” Battle Royal in 2019. The winners of the battle royal would get an opportunity to join the tournament. The Team of Thomas Latimer and Royce Isaacs would be the last team standing and would advance into the tournament. The 2019 Crockett Cup Champions were the team of Brody King and PCO, the Villains Enterprise. They defeated the Wildcard Battle Royal winners Isaacs and Latimer. However, it is unlikely that PCO and Brody would return as both have since signed on elsewhere.
