NWA World Champions in Japan
The National Wrestling Alliance Worlds Heavyweight Championship and World Junior Heavyweight Championship will both be defended on February 14th in Sendai Japan as part of the New Japan Pro Wrestling’s The New Beginning Pay Per View. Presumably, NWA President Bruce Tharpe will lead “The Crown Jewel of the NWA” Chase Owens into his rematch with Jushin “Thunder” Liger for the NWA World Junior Heavyweight Championship. The decorated veteran made his only defense of the title against El Desperado on January 5, 2015. Liger’s Legacy will be that of one of the greatest Junior Heavyweight Wrestlers on the planet even briefly holding the J-Crown WCW Light Heavyweight Championship, the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Championship, GHC Jr. Heavyweight Championship and countless other titles. His opponent Owens is a two time NWA World Jr. Heavyweight Champion and has revenge on his mind after being defeated by Liger back in November. Tharpe will also lead his man “Iron Man” Rob Conway to face his opponent Hiroyoshi Tenzan. These two are no strangers to each other having battled against each other in singles and tag bouts in New Japan Pro Wrestling, even trading the NWA World Tag Team Titles in 2014. The two times NWA World Champion will definitely be testing is mettle against Tenzan who is a former IWGP Heavyweight Champion.
Woman’s World Championship defended Internationally
Last week, Barbi Hayden added another notch to her list of successful defenses as the NWA Woman’s Champion. But she also did something that hadn’t been done since September 2007, that is, defend the NWA Woman’s Championship on Canadian Soil. Defeating Jewells Malone, at Primos Wrestling in Winnipeg, Hayden has become the first champion since Kong to defend the title in Canada. According to CANOE, Hayden’s goal “…was to take as many out-of-state and international bookings as possible, and continue to be a traveling and defending NWA women’s world champion.” Hayden takes her NWA Championship Saturday Night as part of the NWA Florida Underground event in Plant City, Florida taking on Santana Garret.
Adam Pearce NWA HOF 2015
Congrats to “Scrap Iron” Adam Pearce on being inducted into the National Wrestling Alliance Hall of Fame. Pearce not only a five time NWA World Champion, but was also the standard bearer of the NWA representing the group through out the world, defending the NWA World Heavyweight Championship in Mexico, Canada, United Kingdom, Germany, Australia, and all over the United States. Pearce defended the title in Ring of Honor, WFX Wrestling (a short lived Canadian wrestling promotion who had pay per views), and of course was the center piece of Championship Wrestling from Hollywood until he recently stepped away from Independent Professional Wrestling. Last year, Pearce was recognized by Wrestling Cares Association for his achievements in professional wrestling and was honored by the Cauliflower Alley Club Men’s Wrestling Award in 2014. Congrats to Pearce on his induction.
Matt Riviera is the new NWA Western States Heavyweight Champion
For the first time in a long time a new NWA Champion was crowned in the State of California. “The Loverboy” Matt Riviera, who was accompanied to the ring by James J. Dillon and Johnny Morton defeated Long time Rival Americos, “Wrestling Personified” Rix Luxury, and Brian Kendrick in the tournament to be crown Western States Champion at Vendetta Pro’s Reflexion on January 17th in Santa Maria. Riviera’s next title defense will be against Chris Masters at Vendetta Pro’s Shamrock Slam on March 27th in Santa Maria.
