The Worlds of Billy Corgan will collide in Mexico City as part of The World is a Vampire Festival taking place on March 4th from Foro Sol, CDMX. The Wrestling Matches will be part of a day-long event that will feature the Smashing Pumpkins, Interpol Turnstile, Peter Hook & The Light, Deafheaven, The Warning, and more. The National Wrestling Alliance has held a presence in Mexico on and off since it was founded in 1948. Its last partner in the region was Blue Demon Jr. and his NWA Mexico group. Before then, the NWA had a long relationship with EMLL, which became CMLL. EMLL was a strong member of the NWA until the 1990’s, and were given control of many of the world-class championships of the alliance, such as the NWA World Middleweight Championship, the NWA World Welterweight Championship, and the NWA World Light Heavyweight Championship soon after the NWA was created. While the current version of the NWA no longer recognizes these championships, CMLL continued to present them as if the previous version of the NWA still existed and was running the same way it had at it’s start. NWA title match referees were required to wear NWA patches on their shirt, and CMLL used the idea of (fictional) NWA rankings to explain why and when wrestlers gets NWA title chances.
October 25th, 2008 was the last time the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Championship was defended in Mexico City. “Scrap Iron” Adam Pearce would face Blue Demon Jr. in a match that would last nearly 20 minutes. The match was stopped when Pearce who was locked in the figure four leg lock, passed out. It should be noted Pearce was under the rope and the hold should have been broken. But when ownership changed to Bruce Tharpe any connection to Mexico was forgotten.
This first international venture for Billy Corgan’s NWA will see them partnering with AAA. The NWA has recently created a working relationship with AAA and many of their talents will be featured in the AAA Lucha Libre World Cup later in the Month on March 19th, 2023.
It has been 15 years since the Ten Pounds of Gold has been defended in Mexico City, but that all changes on March 4th. The Worlds Heavyweight Champion Tyrus is scheduled to defend against Daga. Former Worlds Champion Trevor Murdoch will face off against Psycho Clown. The World Tag Team Champions, La Rebelion defend against Vampiro and former World Heavyweight Champion Blue Demon Jr. For the AAA Trios Championship Sanson, Guatero, and Forastero will defend against Thom Latimer, Chris Adonis, and Kratos. The Women’s World Championship will be on the line when Kamille defends against Flammer. Sal The Pal will face Jack Cartwheel, Aron Stevens will team with Natalia Markova to take on Arez and La Hiedra in a Mixed Tag Match. And Homicide and Cyon will face Kommander and Octagon Jr.
