Melina’s heading to the Royal Rumble | NWA News

The news of Knockouts Champion, Mickie James returning to the WWE for this year’s Royal Rumble was shocking, to say the least. But as it turns out, Mickie isn’t the only surprise for the rumble. Melina who had been competing in the National Wrestling Alliance is set, to also re-debut at the Rumble.
As reported by Mike Johnson at PWInsider, “The Former WWE Women’s Champion and WWE Divas Champion Melina Perez has come to terms [with a WWE Return.]” Johnson also reported that there was interest in using Melina at the 2020 Women’s Royal Rumble, but was under an NWA agreement.
Melina joined the NWA POWERRR Roster in the first season. Her role was as the manager for Marti Belle and Thunder Rosa. But the focus changed to an in-ring competitor when Rosa became Women’s World Champion. Melina demanded a match against Thunder Rosa, but walked out mid-match.
After the pandemic pause, Melina had turned over a new leaf. Almost a sidekick to Thunder Rosa. Melina would rack up some solid victories in the NWA. She challenged Deonna Purrazo for the Knockouts Title at the EmPOWERRR Pay Per View. Her most recent appearance on NWA POWERRR was being interviewed by May Valentine. Melina expressed disappointment, that the NWA asked her to prove herself for an opportunity to challenge for the Burke. Stating that she knows her worth.
Melina would defeat Chelsea Green and Kylie Rae on the August 30th episode of NWA POWERRR. This victory earned her a title shot at Kamille at Hard Times 2. And although she lost, Melina never looked better in the ring.
Melina defeated Mickie James for two of her three WWE Women’s Championships. She’s also a 2-time Divas Champion. Melina once won a 9 Women Battle Royal at the Eddie Guerrero Tribute Show in 2005. Melina’s last appearance was the Royal Rumble was in 2009. That’s where she defeated Beth Phoenix to win her 3rd Women’s Championship.
