Cabana defeats Aldis at Ring of Honor

At the Express Live! Arena in Columbus Ohio, Nick Aldis, and Colt Cabana locked horns once again for the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Championship as part of the Ring of Honor Masters of Craft. For the first time since Cody won the title at All In, Nick Aldis lost the match.

Ring of Honor hadn’t previously announced that the duo would be contesting for the title prior to the show. In fact, the match was made while the two were doing commentary for the show. Ironic that a Worlds Heavyweight Championship would be defended in an impromptu match between the exact same two competitors that battled over the belt in a historic match in China one year earlier.

One year earlier Nick Aldis representing the National Wrestling Alliance defended his Worlds Heavyweight Championship, in Wenzhou China. No other NWA Worlds Heavyweight Champion has been able to do this. At the time, this was one of the biggest matches in the NWA’s history (under Billy Corgan’s ownership.) Cabana a two-time champion was chosen to represent Championship Wrestling from Hollywood as both of his two previous championship victories were in a CWFH ring.

Exactly one year to the date, the two clashed. Previously Aldis had won the match with a roll up after Cabana failed to hook the leg in a pin attempt after a moonsault. This match wouldn’t be without controversy. The man challenging for the Worlds Heavyweight Championship at Crockett Cup 2019, Marty Scurll would interfere in the match. Even striking Cabana to ensure that the title wouldn’t change hands.

This would mark the 8th time the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Championship had been defended in Ring of Honor. Previous champions to defend in ROH were AJ Styles, “Scrap Iron” Adam Pearce, “The Shooter” Brent Albright, and Cody.
