A View from a DKM: It’s a Special Thing to See

Kerry BeltOn May 6, 1984, I saw the NWA World Heavyweight title defended for the first time. I was part of a record setting crowd that saw Kerry Von Erich defeat Ric Flair for the title in Texas Stadium. We were up high and far way and there was no giant screen to watch, but it was still very special and a day I remember forever.

I would see the title defended again a few times over the years. Kerry Von Erich, Ric Flair, Sting, Dan Severn, Adam Pearce, and Rob Conway all successfully defended the title while I was in the crowd and it was pretty exciting each time but nothing like the title change. That was a special moment.

Jax TitleSo fast forward over 31 years from when I saw Kerry win the title in a football stadium and I’m in a community gymnasium to
watch Japanese legend Hiroyoshi Tenzan defend the title Jax Dane. No record crowd and this time I was in the second row. Still on that night, August 29, 2015, I saw the title change hands again. You know what? It was still very special and a day I will remember forever.
